Hang-Tyme’s Fantasy Football League is now entering the final year of its childhood, as it turns 17 years-old. It’s exciting at the same time as incredible for me as I see the league develop into an annual celebration. Every year, the people I consider as close friends come together to participate in a league that is still utilizing manual scoring, live (in-person) drafts, and antiquated score-keeping formulas.
Regardless, the people that participate have a great attitude and continue to display their loyalties (and interests, for the newer folks) to return and give themselves up to football for several months, aiming at a measly few hundred bucks and a trophy. But, with the spirit and energy that exudes every year when the Draft takes place, it’s something I will continue to lead and promote no matter how antiquated the league appears. The thought of bringing together all these great people that participate is too good for me to pass up, and it will be something I continue to dedicate time to, year in and year out.
Last season, Cedric Cheng took the title for the second time in his career, after a long drought. His persistence paid off in the final week when he took over the lead for good after Mike King led the league for most of the season. Had Mike King held onto the lead for good, it would have landed him a fifth title, which is by far the best in league history.
Although we lose Sandra Lattin this year, we return everyone else from last year while adding a newcomer, Sanny Tabulinar, that we hope can become an annual participant.
So, while other leagues feature live scoring updates, online data, and other highly tech-oriented “stuff”, this league will stick to its roots and continue to roll along at a more “human” pace. However, as reluctant as this Commish has been over the past 17 years, he is finally giving into something a bit more modern this year, as he looks to implement an on-line lineup site. That was tough for me to give into, but as I witness year after year of dedicated coaches adjust to the “slowness” of this league, I had to make at least one adjustment that appeared to be more convenient for his coaches.
With the NFL season kicking off on Thursdays, it’s become nearly impossible for all of the coaches to gather together for the opening week, but I assume that all of us will be glued to the set at that time and feel the vibe of the others in the league that will follow every highlight, replay, and statistical updates that come up every second. So, with that said, I would like to thank all of the coaches for participating this year, and wish them all the very best of luck! I hope that all of your teams remain relatively healthy, and that the season brings you competitive joy and excitement that every other season has brought in the past. Good luck once again, and let’s get ready to rumble!!!
